President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday repeated his allegation of Parliament obstructing projects planned by the government.
During a visit to Haa Alif Hoarafushi, the President said his aim was to fulfil campaign pledges and that significant assistance was needed within Parliament to speedily carry out projects without obstacles. Due to the Maldives constitution and system of government, Parliament could obstruct projects that the government wants to undertake, he said.
"Regardless of how big a project the government wants to carry out, the People's Majlis can stop it, by making a law, by making changes to a law and through other means as well. And they bring changes, too. They can pose obstacles," he said.
Parliament obstructed government projects in the past as it has obstructed the government during the three months since the new administration took office, he said.
"You would have seen in the past three months as well many obstacles being posed without any basis to governing, to a lot of our work while it was ongoing under the plan set for the [first] 14 weeks to fulfil the pledges I made," the President said.
Continuing in the same vein, the President said it was very important at the national, developmental, individual and island levels to ensure that the person elected to Parliament would help and pave the way for projects.
During his official trip to four northern atolls, President Muizzu urged the public to vote for MPs who would cooperate with the government to fulfil campaign pledges.
Despite the President appearing in his speeches to be campaigning for the upcoming parliamentary elections, the President's Office said yesterday that the tour of the northern atolls was not a campaign trip.
