The government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has launched the 'Rayyithunge Adu' (Citizens' Voice) portal without a feature to file anonymous complaints.
The feature was available in portals created to file complaints to former Presidents Abdulla Yameen and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the last two administrations.
The only way to login to the Rayyithunge Adu portal, which was launched on Friday to submit complaints and suggestions directly to the President, is through the Efaas used to access e-government services.
When questioned about the reason for not including a feature to file anonymous complaints, President's Office Communications Minister Ibrahim Khaleel said it was done to ensure "genuine complaints from genuine people."
"People send questions and letters to the President's Office even now. Letters are confidential. This is a clearer, easier way instead of sending letters," he said.
The former government included a feature for anonymous complaints to give the opportunity to those who are hesitant to file complaints.
Speaking after launching the portal on Friday night, President Muizzu said the purpose of the portal is to facilitate working closely with the people.
"I will answer the questions sent to the portal. I promised to establish a transparent and accountable government. I will answer them, hopefully," he said.
The President announced that a portal will be launched to send complaints and questions during his presidential address earlier this month.
In his presidential address, Muizzu said he wants to work as closely as possible with the people and the media.
However, journalists have been expressing concern over the absence of a spokesperson at the President's Office for more than 50 days.
There has also been concern over difficulties in getting information from the ministries and the President's Office.
