President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Friday night that the salaries of police and military will be increased starting next month despite strong cost-cutting measures introduced due to financial instability.

Speaking at the first session of the 'Ahaa' (Ask) public forum at Sultan Park, Muizzu said the salaries of police and military will be increased starting in March. But he did not provide details.

During the presidential election campaign, Muizzu promised to double the salaries of police and military. But he later said salaries would be increased by 35 percent in the first year, 25 percent in the second year and 40 percent in the last year of his term.

The government has not disclosed the total cost due to increasing salaries.

According to information gathered by Adhadhu, MVR 600 million will be spent each year with a salary increase. MVR 400 million will be needed for the remaining 10 months of this year.

The police and military are the two most costly government institutions in terms of salaries.

MVR 1 billion is spent each year on the salaries and allowances of police and military.

The salary increase for police and military comes at a time when the Finance Ministry has ordered all government agencies to implement strict cost-cutting measures due to financial instability.

In a circular signed by Finance Minister Mohamed Shafeeq issued on February 22, spending will be curbed in seven areas.

The circular notes that no new posts can be created, salary structures cannot be changed, no new allowances can be introduced, no promotions can be given and no overtime can be approved except for essential work.

It also requires government agencies to seek permission from the Finance Ministry for overseas trips and domestic trips which cost more than MVR 35,000.
