The Elections Commission (EC) revealed yesterday that 381 applications were submitted by the deadline to contest in the March 17 parliamentary elections.

EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb said that a total of 381 forms were submitted to the commission and that efforts were underway to check the forms.

The forms include 89 from main the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and 41 from the Democrats.

Forty-nine forms were submitted by independent candidates representing former President Abdulla Yameen's People's National Front (PNF).

The number of forms submitted by the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) is unclear. MPs will be elected for 93 constituencies in the 20th session of the People's Majlis.

The parliamentary elections are now scheduled for March 17. However, the Parliament has amended the law to hold the elections 10 days after Ramadan.

Habeeb said the commission would fix a new date for the elections after the bill passed by parliament is ratified and comes into effect.
