Reclamation to add land to the second phase of Thilafushi has been completed in line with the masterplan to develop the island.
Land reclamation in areas A, B, E and F has been completed under the second phase of the Thilafushi land reclamation project, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said yesterday. A total of 120 hectares were reclaimed.
Work is ongoing on levelling the reclaimed land in area A, HDC said.
The Thilafushi masterplan was devised to solve problems with industrial work. HDC's plan to reclaim the second phase of Thilafushi was divided into six areas.
Land reclamation and coastal protection for areas A, B, E and F, which was completed on Monday, began on September 14, 2023.
The land reclamation and coastal protection work was contracted to the China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd.
HDC carried out the Thilafushi land reclamation project with advice and instructions from the Maldivian government to allow industrial work to be done away from residential areas.
Large plots of land are to be leased under the Thilafushi masterplan to provide space for industrial uses. Revolutionary economic progress is expected when Hulhumale’, Male’, Vilimale’, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi are connected via the Thilamale’ bridge.
