Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister Dr. Aishath Rameela has returned to work after seeking treatment for cancer.
"Minister Rameela came to office today and joined today's cabinet meeting as well," President's Office Communications Minister Ibrahim Khaleel told Adhadhu.
Prior to leaving for India to seek cancer treatment two months ago, the minister said she discovered the cancer during its last stage. Rameela said on Facebook that she was departing overseas to seek chemo and radiation therapy.
In a Facebook post upon her return, Rameela said she had completed the first phase of the treatment without many side effects.
"My hope is to do the best work possible in these few weeks before the second phase of the treatment begins," she wrote, thanking well-wishers and expressing happiness over returning to work.
Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon was temporarily put in charge of the Agriculture Ministry after Rameela's departure.
When Parliament voted on ministerial appointees, Rameela was approved unanimously by the 70 MPs who participated in the vote.
Rameela previously served as a state minister at both the Health Ministry and the Gender Ministry.
