President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged last night to connect Male’ and Rasmale’ through an undersea tunnel with an underwater view as part of plans to develop a transport system with modern facilities between the islands.
During his campaign, Male’ city’s new Mayor Adam Azim criticized the policy of reclaiming Fushidhiggaru to develop a new city called Rasmale’ before completing the work of reclaiming lagoons near Male’ and populating the islands.
Speaking at the swearing-ceremony for the new mayor in Dharubaaruge, Muizzu said discussions have taken place with capable companies and that feasibility studies are currently underway.
“That tunnel will become one where the beautiful underwater view can be seen when you’re traveling on the train that rides through the tunnel, a project that would increase tourists by many millions. We will pursue a well-tailored policy,” President Muizzu said.
The housing needed by the people of Male’ could only be provided by reclaiming the lagoons of Giraavaru, Gulhifalhu and Uthuru Thila Falhu in addition to Fushidhiggaru, he said.
