Male' prison shut down, inmates transferred to another facility

The Male' prison has been shut down after transferring prisoners to another facility, the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) announced today.

The government earlier announced that the prisoners would be transferred to Maafushi Jail and Asseyri Jail.

"The government decided to close the jail after consulting with the authorities as the students of the Dharumavantha School, built by the former government adjacent to the jail, have been adversely affected by the presence of a jail there," the Corrections said in a statement.

Although the jail has been shut down, the services provided by the jail counters will be available until January 12.

The Male' prison opened on January 17, 2008.
