The government has denied allegations that MPs are being bribed to sign up for the ruling People's National Congress-Progressive Party of Maldives (PNC-PPM) coalition.

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) made the allegations in parliament today. Some MPs told Adhadhu that they were being offered money to join President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's party.

During a press conference at the President's Office today, Adhadhu asked the government's chief spokesperson Mohamed Shaheeb whether such offers had been made and whether it was being done to prevent any attempt to impeach the President.

"The allegations are completely false," he said.

Some MPs who spoke to Adhadhu said they were being offered money and government jobs to join the PNC.

"They offered MVR 1.5 million as a price. They also offered a state minister-level post if I do not contest in next year's elections. They also offered to guarantee jobs for family and associates," an MDP MP said on the condition of anonymity.

The PNC will hold a special rally tonight to celebrate the signing of the MPs. The ruling coalition has now sent out invitations to the rally at Dharubaaruge. President Muizzu will also be present.

Opposition MPs are joining PNC at a time when MDP, which holds the parliament majority, has amended the procedure for impeachment of the President.

Kurendhoo MP Abdul Ghani Abdul Hakeem and Mulak MP Ibrahim Naseer left the MDP on Wednesday while Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef has also recently resigned from the party.

Komandoo MP Mohamed Raashid told Adhadhu that he has decided to sign up for the PNC and will attend the rally tonight.
