Prisoners and officers were injured in a disturbance that occurred during an attempted search of a Maafushi jail cell.
Prisoners usually attack prison guards who enter cells for "random checks" and Wednesday's violence was one such incident, the Corrections media official told Adhadhu.
"Prisoners attacked officers when they entered to search cells. Such disturbances occur commonly as officers find contraband used by prisoners during these searches. Officers used powers authorized under the law to regain control when they were attacked," the media officer said.
Both prisoners and officers sustained minor injuries in the clash, for which they have since received treatment, according to the media officer.
Photos circulated on social media by Udhares alleged torture of prisoners. The photos showed bruises on the body and head injuries.
However, Corrections said it could not confirm whether the photos were related to Wednesday's incident.
