The opposition candidate for the Mayoral seat in Male', Adam Azim, has expressed concern over the delay in establishing facilities in the lagoons reclaimed to provide housing for the residents of the city.

In an interview with Adhadhu's 'Etherefuh' program, Azim said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was pursuing his dream of reclaiming Fushidhiggaru lagoon instead of developing the lagoons that have already been reclaimed.

Azim said the government should give priority to resolving key issues such as housing as soon as possible instead of wasting state money on projects that are yet to begin.

He called on the government to develop Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu and Uthuru Thila Falhu in line with the former government's vision. The former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government had awarded land for housing from the lagoons.

"Arrangements should have been made on day one for the people to visit these lagoons. I think it is very inhuman to stop it. If they have any humanity, the land plots and flats should be given to their rightful owners as soon as possible," Azim stated.

He said that although a bridge could connect Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu and Uthuru Thila Falhu, it would not be possible to build a bridge to Fushidhiggaru lagoon.

The reclamation and shore protection of Fushidhiggaru lagoon is estimated to cost about USD 500 million, he said.

"Hulhumale' phase 2 is still incomplete. There are no roads, no electricity, no water, no schools. Wasn't the President elected to use the money to find better living conditions for the people living in these places?" Azim said.

"He was not elected to make his dream come true. He was elected to make the people's dream come true."

Azim said the Greater Male' area should be developed to prevent congestion in the city. He promised to give special priority to developing the reclaimed areas if elected mayor.
