Immigration has decided to launch an operation targeting undocumented expatriates in the Maldives.

Immigration said the identity and visas of foreigners will be checked during the operation and action will be taken against those who violate the Immigration Act.

The purpose of the operation is to reduce the number of undocumented expatriates and ensure that foreign workers act according to procedures.

In 2019, the Economic Ministry, the Foreign Ministry and the Maldives Immigration jointly launched a campaign to track down and deport undocumented foreigners.

More than 18,000 undocumented foreigners have been deported from Maldives during the Covid pandemic.

The Economic Ministry said in November that 523,755 quotas had been issued for foreign workers in the last 11 years.
