The new political party by former President Abdulla Yameen is to be named the People's National Front (PNF).
Yameen, the former leader of the ruling coalition, left the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) after a dispute with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
He accused the PPM leadership of abandoning him and alleged Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) of trying to downsize PPM.
He also accused Muizzu of ignoring his phone calls and messages.
The name and logo of the new political party were shared on social media on Saturday night. Paperwork to register the party will be submitted on Sunday.
Many of the PPM and PNC leaders have distanced themselves from Yameen while some of them have spoken in defense of the government.
Yameen’s party is led by his lawyer and first vice president, Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and former Youth Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal.
Political parties operate in different countries under the name of National Front. Such parties are generally considered to be right-wing.
