A decision on continuing the previous government's 'Gedhoruveriya' flats project will be made after consulting the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Housing Minister Ali Haidar has said.
The new government's Housing Minister told Adhadhu today that the awarding of flats to the public would not be stopped despite the project having been carried out by the previous government.
As the project has been suspended on the orders of the ACC, a decision on proceeding will be made after consultations with the commission, he said.
The list of recipients would be compiled again if instructed by the ACC, Haidar said.
The previous government's Planning Ministry released the list of recipients after a complaint was lodged with the ACC alleging corrupt attempts to unfairly hand out 4,000 flats.
At first, the ACC ordered the ministry to allow an adequate period for the submission of complaints before proceeding with the project.
The Planning Ministry gave five days for complaints.
The ACC ordered the project to be suspended when the ministry published a final list of recipients, drew lots and started signing agreements after the complaints period ended.
During the transition period, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also urged the previous government not to continue the project in the final days of its term as flats found to have been awarded unlawfully could be taken back.
