The Criminal Court has handed a two-year jail sentence to the driver involved in an accident that caused serious injuries to a 50-year-old man on Eid al-Adha.
The speeding motorcycle crashed into Ali Hafeez, a senior lecturer at the Maldives National University, as he was crossing Majeedhee Magu near the Heenaamage parking zone after dawn prayers.
The man on the motorcycle that hit Hafeez - who required treatment overseas for life-threatening injuries - had been driving without a license.
Shammoon Abdul Shukoor, from Raa Inguraidhoo, was charged with reckless endangerment.
Shammoon confessed and signed a plea agreement with the prosecution.
The baseline sentence for the offence in the penal code is imprisonment for one year, seven months and seven days.
But the sentence was aggravated by three levels based on the seriousness of the injuries caused to Hafeez.
With mitigation of two levels for cooperating with the authorities, the sentence was determined to be two years in prison.
After deducting the period that Shammoon was detained over the accident, he would have to serve one year, 10 months and 29 days in prison.
