Applications for the first flats under the current government's 'Gedhoruveriya' scheme were awarded points based on forms submitted to the online portal, State Minister for Housing Akram Kamaluddin, chair of the Gedhoruveriya committee, said on Sunday.

Following the publication of the list of recipients on Saturday, a group of disgruntled applicants gathered and protested at the Housing Ministry today.

Speaking to the protesters, Akram said complaints could now be submitted through the portal.

"The points on the form are...I know you will be displeased by what I say. Points will be given based on how you fill the form on the portal," Akram said at the Housing Ministry, prompting the protesters to raise their voices and stop him from explaining.

Despite repeatedly asking them to listen, Akram was not allowed to continue talking.

The 4,000 flats in the first round are to be awarded to applicants eligible for three-bedroom apartments who scored above 76 marks and to applicants eligible for two-bedroom apartments who scored above 73 marks.

Aside from the recipients of the first 4,000 flats, other applicants deemed eligible in the final list would be handed a document through the portal confirming that they will be awarded flats under future government housing projects, the Planning Ministry said.

The government has been building 32 towers with 18 floors each in Hulhumale' phase two for the housing scheme.

The towers include 1,200 two-bedroom units and 2,800 three-bedroom units. Work is now nearing completion on the apartments.
