People's National Congress (PNC) Chairman Abdul Raheem Abdulla on Thursday declined to comment on a warning issued to former President Abdulla Yameen for violating an agreement for his transfer to house arrest.
Asked about the incident by Adhadhu at a press briefing at the Velana International Airport ahead of a trip to Addu city, Abdul Raheem said the party does not need to comment if the statement by the Maldives Correctional Service (MSC) about warning Yameen was in line with the law.
In contrast to Abdul Raheem's remarks, the Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) previously called the 11-year prison sentence handed to Yameen on bribery and money laundering charges over the lease of Vaavu Aarah a "haram verdict."
Both parties repeatedly insisted that the sentence was politically motivated.
After granting relief from the punishment for his conviction, the Correctional Service issued the warning for violating the agreement signed for his transfer from prison.
"As you say, if a statement is released in accordance with the jails and parole law, we don't have to respond to that. Isn't that so? That is because, as you know, they released the statement with reference to a law," Abdul Raheem said.
It would be inappropriate for the party to comment because the Correctional Service cited the law, he said.
Speaking at a rally in Addu on Saturday, Abdul Raheem denied claims about divisions in the PPM-PNC leadership and urged members to not allow disunity.
"Don't allow space for discord and disharmony in our party. No one should allow the opportunity to divide and dismantle our party. Don't allow space for anything that could weaken the government that we the Maldivian people established with hard work," he said.
