The Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) will provide a special allowance in addition to the salary of MPs to women who contest on PPM-PNC tickets and win seats in next year's parliamentary elections, President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said.
In a post on X today, Muizzu urged as many women as possible to contest for parliament.
Dr. Muizzu called for the PPM-PNC to reserve tickets for 20 percent of seats or 18 out of 93 seats in the 20th parliament to women.
"To encourage this, I will work towards arranging a special allowance from the party to every woman MP elected to parliament from the PPM-PNC in addition to the salary and allowance from parliament," Muizzu wrote.
The law currently does not have a quota for women in parliament. Only four women were elected to the 19th parliament.
The Democrats party recently proposed legal changes to reduce the number of MPs and to reserve seats for women.
