Fenaka Corporation on Wednesday accused the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of misleading the public with its statement about investigating 75 cases of alleged corruption and instructing the utility company to recover more than MVR 20 million related to the cases.

Fenaka said in a press statement that the ACC referred to cases and lost assets that date back to the company’s formation in 2012.

In its statement on Tuesday, the ACC did not clearly state when the complaints about the alleged corruption had been submitted.

Fenaka said the MVR 20,504,491.54 that the ACC asked the company to recover stemmed from four transactions conducted between 2011 and 2017.

Details released by Fenaka:

  • MVR 240,000 allegedly disbursed from the company’s budget by the then-managing director through abuse of authority to fund the studies of the Southern Utilities Ltd’s former finance director
  • MVR 1،017،170.44 incurred as losses in 2015 over a payment made to a private company without deducting fines in accordance with Fenaka’s procurement policy
  • MVR 17،857،979.10 owed to the company in a transaction with a private company to purchase dollars needed for Fenaka in 2016
  • MVR 1،389،342.00 incurred as losses in 2017  in a transaction with a private company to purchase a billing software needed for Fenaka

According to the ACC, the Fenaka cases under investigation involve abuse of authority for undue gain, employment of persons in violation of hiring rules, violations of the company’s procurement rules and disbursement of funds in violation of payment procedures.

ACC said it has instructed Fenaka to implement 97 reforms in connection with the corruption cases, including 48 reforms related to management, 24 reforms related to policies, six reforms related to recovery of lost assets and six reforms related to investigations.
