A dead body found floating near Kaafu Dhoonidhoo on Thursday morning was a man who went swimming near the Rasfannu beach in Male' last night, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has said.

The MNDF said in a statement today that he was reported to have gone swimming near Rasfannu at 7:45 pm on Wednesday night. A search was launched then.

"The man's body was found by the crew of an MTCC [Maldives Transport and Contracting Company] ferry that traveled near Dhoonidhoo," the military said.

The body was found between Dhoonidhoo and Funaddoo around 9:45 am this morning, the police said.

His body had been seen in the water last night after he jumped, the police said. But the body floated away by the time police officers swam to rescue him.

"A police officer who attended the scene jumped into the sea and tried to rescue him. But the man disappeared without a trace before [the police officer] swam and reached the spot," the police said.

Since last night, soldiers searched a 41,590 square meter area to look for the man, the MNDF said.

The body has now been brought to Male' with the help of the police. Neither the police nor MNDF has revealed any further details about the deceased.
