Customs have foiled a drug smuggling attempt and seized 4.7kg of heroin at the airport.

The drugs were seized from a 20-year-old woman who arrived from Pakistan, customs said on Thursday.

"When customs analyzed the substance at the first stage, it tested positive for heroin," customs said.

The estimated street value of the 4.7kg of heroin was MVR 5.8 million. The drugs and the suspected female smuggler have been handed over to the police, customs said.

The drugs were found after customs officials grew suspicious and checked the woman's luggage.

The drugs were contained in packets and one packet was taken out of the passenger's luggage, customs said.
