After winning the presidential election on the People's National Congress (PNC) ticket, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was appointed as the party's president on Wednesday night.
At a PNC council meeting, Vice President-elect Hussain Mohamed Latheef was appointed the party's vice president and former PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdulla was appointed chairperson.
The three were appointed to the PNC's top posts unanimously with the votes of 40 members who attended the meeting, the party said.
Muizzu, who was formerly a vice president of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), switched to the PNC for the party's ticket.
Faresmaathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef's switch from the PPM to the PNC was not previously announced by either party. It was revealed at Tuesday's sitting of parliament.
The PNC has about 3,000 members. Contesting on the party's ticket, Muizzu defeated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with 54 percent of the vote, which was 129,159 votes to the incumbent's 109,868 votes.
