President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called to transfer jailed former President Abdulla Yameen to house arrest.
Speaking after his election victory on Saturday night, Muizzu said transferring Yameen to house arrest would be in the best interest of the country.
The opposition leader is serving an 11-year jail sentence for bribery in connection to the leasing of an island while he was in office.
Muizzu said the results were a great encouragement to build the country's future and ensure its independence.
“I would like to ask the President to transfer our beloved President, President Yameen, home,” the Male' Mayor and former Housing Minister said.
Muizzu said the formation of the new government would be done during the transition period and that he would work at a fast pace after being sworn into office.
According to the interim results of the second round of the presidential election, Muizzu received more than 127,000 votes. President Solih received 108,000 votes.
