Hussain Mavaz, who was found guilty of murdering his brother Ahmed Shuaib, has been sentenced to 12 years in jail.

Mavaz, 25, stabbed Ahmed Shuaib, 27, on the night of May 31 in Addu Maradhoo. He went into hiding but he turned himself in on the following day after the police announced a search. He was charged with murder.

Mavaz pleaded guilty and recounted the incident at court. The judge convicted him based on his confession.

Mavaz also expressed remorse and told the judge that he had repented for the sin, according to the Criminal Court.

The guilty verdict was reached after Mavaz entered a plea agreement with the prosecution.

According to the agreement, Mavaz had a criminal record of rape and diamorphine trafficking cases and faced 15 years in prison.

But since he had confessed and cooperated with the authorities, the agreement proposed to lower the sentence to 12 years and six months in prison.

Judge Adam Mohamed sentenced him to 12 years and six months as proposed in the agreement and also ordered him to fast for 60 days as expiation.

Mavaz is believed to have assaulted Shuaib with a scissor near their residence. Shuaib passed away while undergoing treatment for injuries at the Addu Equatorial Hospital.
