President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday wrote off all outstanding payments for illegal parking fines imposed over the past five years.
The president accepts the public complaints about imposing fines despite the unavailability of parking space in Male', the government said in a statement.
"As the government and the president believe that this is happening, he decided to provide relief to the people," the statement read.
The president also decided to offer relief for other traffic violation fines, which could be waived upon completion of a training program.
The training program would be conducted by the police from two weeks to one month.
"The purpose of doing this is to reduce repeat offenses by those who violate traffic rules," the statement noted.
The decision to write off outstanding parking fines comes after the president pledged to offer relief for traffic violations in 2021.
With three days to go before the presidential election, the other contenders are Dr. Mohamed Muizzu from the People's National Congress (PNC), Qasim Ibrahim from the Jumhooree Party (JP), Ilyas Labeeb from The Democrats and Mohamed Nazim from the Maldives National Party (MNP) as well as Umar Naseer, Faris Maumoon and Hassan Zameel as independent candidates.
