Prison officers on the frontline have officially started wearing body-worn cameras on their uniforms.
A media official from the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) told Adhadhu that a trial run for using the cameras and training for officers have been completed. Body-worn cameras will be used permanently on the uniforms of frontline prison officers in all jails with effect on Tuesday, the official said.
Corrections started using cameras of the Axon brand. The body-worn cameras would make prison officers more responsible and accountable, MCS said.
Audio and video recordings would help both internal and external investigations into incidents that occur at jails, the prisons authority said. Video footage recorded by the camera cannot be edited, MCS noted.
The introduction of the cameras is an important step towards ensuring the security of inmates and prison officers, corrections said.
Body-worn cameras are also used by police officers to allow monitoring of their conduct.
