The Planning Ministry has announced the successful completion of the reclamation work of Addu under the city's development project.
Addu Development Project aims to add land needed for the city for the next 50 years to develop tourism and boost the economy.
Under the project, 194 hectares of land was added to Addu city and 11 km of shore protection will be established.
The Planning Ministry said on Monday that the reclamation work in Addu was in August. Some 76 hectares in Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo and 80 hectares in Hithadhoo have been reclaimed.
The ministry added that 25 hectares of land for three resort islands and 4.72 hectares in Hankede have also been reclaimed.
Addu city council on Monday approved names for the three new islands to be developed as tourist resorts.
Names given to the new islands
- 'Island 1' - Dhondheenihera
- 'Island 2' - Bolihera
- 'Island 3' - Dhonhera
The city council named the islands because the Ministry of Tourism is getting ready to open the bidding process to develop them as resorts.
Addu land reclamation project is being implemented with a USD 800 million credit line from Exim Bank of India.
The planning ministry said 75 percent of the entire project is now complete with efforts underway for shore protection in the reclaimed lands.
