Hulhumale' phase two reclamation due to begin

Vessels docked at the Hulhumale' harbor have been ordered to leave ahead of land reclamation for awarding plots to residents of Male'.

Hulhumale' developer Urbanco said in an announcement made today that both anchored boats and sunken vessels need to be removed for projects that the company is planning to undertake in the Hulhumale' phase two lagoon.

The phase two lagoon was designated for a cruise terminal in the Hulhumale' masterplan. But the government has decided to change the plan to reclaim land and provide housing for native Male' residents. Some of the plots to be awarded from Hulhumale' under the government's 'Binveriya' scheme are to come from the reclaimed land.

Urbanco gave 10 days to remove the docked vessels.

Citing rules previously enacted for clearing out the Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu lagoons, the announcement stated that vessels that are not removed will be moved to a different location and that the corporation will not bear responsibility for any damages incurred in the process.

Of 6200 land plots to be awarded under the housing scheme, 2200 plots are to be handed over from Hulhumale. Drawing of lots among eligible applicants is currently underway.

The rest of the plots under the scheme are to be awarded from Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru with at least 2000 plots each from the reclaimed lagoons.
