The largest opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has called on authorities not to obstruct the right to assembly.
Police on Thursday used force to disperse a protest by PPM on Gaaf Alifu Villingili as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih prepared to visit the island.
Three people were arrested on the islands. Police accuse them of attacking officers.
PPM condemned the police crackdown and accused the police of targeting peaceful protestors in Villingili island.
Three PPM members were "brutally arrested" in what the party says is a violation of the right to freedom of expression, assembly and protest.
"The right to expression and assembly are fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and we call on the government not to interfere with them," a statement issued on Friday read.
The party called on the police not to follow the government's "unlawful" orders.
Solih is currently campaigning in the atolls for re-election in the September 9 presidential polls.
Opposition supporters in the islands are protesting to demand the release of jailed former President Abdulla Yameen.
