Swimming has been banned in the Male' swim track area after tests showed growing traces of sewage.
The ban was imposed as advised by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the Swimming Association said in a statement today.
The track will be reopened after regular testing shows the water to be safe, the statement added.
"As the results of the latest tests of saltwater from the swimming track showed that traces of sewage has increased, and because the Health Protection Agency has informed that swimming in the area is not safe, swimming at the track has been prohibited as of now," the Swimming Association's statement read.
The swimming track in Male's southern waterfront is used by many students. The track is a busy area used for swimming lessons and practising for competitions.
