Former deputy defense minister Hassan Zameel and his wife submitted candidacy papers today to contest in the September 9 presidential election.
Zameel's running mate is his wife Mariyam Aleem and his son Ahmed Mahzan Zameel is his campaign agent.
Zameel's support form with 1670 signatures was handed over to EC President Fuwad Thoweek.
Speaking after submitting the form, Zameel said he wishes that the person who wins the election, regardless of the candidate, would serve the nation well.
"I started this work because a government formed by a party coalition is unable to improve matters of the country under the current political landscape. Therefore, I assure you that I won't join a party coalition," Zameel said on his official Facebook campaign page.
Zameel was appointed as deputy minister of defense under the current government on February 20, 2019. He resigned from the post on July 13, 2023. Zameel, who holds a masters degree in law, previously served as deputy director and director general at the tourism ministry.
Zameel's wife Mariyam Aleem worked at the ministry of atolls development for 21 years. She also worked at the Prosecutor General's office for 11 years.
