22,882 forms submitted by deadline for online re-registration

Some 22,882 forms were submitted by the deadline to register online to vote outside the island of permanent residence, according to the Elections Commission (EC).

Of the total forms submitted by the deadline of 12am on Thursday, the EC said 18,088 forms were accepted for registration. The rest were rejected over incomplete information, EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb said.

"The rejected forms include forms submitted to register at the place previously registered and forms rejected over problems such as the photo submitted with the form not matching the ID card photo," Habeeb said.

The EC previously estimated that more than 100,000 people would re-register to vote in the presidential election. But the number is about 30,000 ahead of Saturday's deadline for submitting paper forms in person.

The number of ballot boxes to be kept in resorts and overseas would be decided after the re-registration deadline. Based on the number of voters who have registered so far, the EC has decided to set up polling stations in four other countries.

Unlike previous elections, information about re-registered voters will be published this time in order to ensure fairness and transparency, the commission said previously.

The first round of the presidential election is scheduled for September 9. If a second round of voting is required, the run-off election will take place on September 30.

Some 282,395 people are eligible to vote in this year's election. The EC expects to keep more than 600 ballot boxes for the presidential election.
