Faris Maumoon, president of the dissolved Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), has gathered signatures to contest in the presidential election.
Faris said in a tweet today that he has secured the 1500 signatures needed for submission. But the opportunity remains open for those who want to sign, he added.
He also invited volunteers for MRM's campaign.
MRM Vice President Aminath Nadira told Adhadhu that neither the date to submit candidacy papers nor a running mate has been decided yet despite securing enough signatures.
The presidential election law requires a support form with the signatures of at least 1500 people to be submitted to the Elections Commission (EC) in order to contest as an independent candidate.
The EC decided to dissolve the MRM for failing below the minimum of 3000 members required by law.
MRM is part of the governing coalition. The party recently rejected President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's invitation to form a new coalition with the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party for the upcoming election.
The deadline for filing candidacy papers is 2 pm on August 7.
