The Election Commission (EC) has decided to dissolve the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) led by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for a second time for failing to reach the minimum membership threshold.
The EC announced the dissolution of the MRM in a post on X.
"The Commission has decided to dissolve the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) as it has not reached the required number of 3000 (three thousand) members under the Political Party Act," the post read.
The EC first dissolved MRM on May 24 last year on the grounds that the party did not have the minimum 3,000 members required by law. The party failed to recruit enough members during the period offered to do so, the commission said.
However, the Civil Court on February 12 ruled quashed the EC's decision.
The MRM was formed after former President Gayoom lost control of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
