Agreements were signed with Japan on Sunday to provide scholarships and visa facilities to Maldives.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa signed the agreement.
Hayashi arrived in Maldives on a two-day official visit on Saturday night. The visit, which runs from July 29 to 30, is at the invitation of Shahid.
Japan decided to provide human development scholarships to Maldives and the two countries also agreed to waive visa requirements for diplomatic and official passports for up to 90 days.
Hayashi also met Defense Minister Maria Ahmed Didi and attended the ceremony of donating a fireboat and ICT equipment to the MNDF.
He also visited Kalaafaanu School built with the assistance of the Japanese Government and visited the Tetrapod Monument, a symbol of Japan-Maldives relations.
This is the highest-level visit by a Japanese government official to the Maldives, since the visit of former Foreign Minister, Taro Kono in January 2018.
