Eva to be named Ilyas' running mate

The Democrats has decided to name Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla as the running mate of presidential candidate Ilyas Labeeb.

The decision to appoint Eva, 45, a relative of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, was confirmed to Adhadhu by a Democrats MP.

Eva is facing a no-confidence motion submitted by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to remove her from the deputy speaker post.

However, parliament became deadlocked after the MDP also moved to impeach Speaker Nasheed and broke for recess without voting on either no-confidence motion.

Now serving her third term as MP for Galolhu Uthuru, Eva was actively involved in the formation of the MDP and the pro-democracy movement in the early 2000s.

Eva earned her first degree in politics and government at Kent University in England and completed her masters in politics and international relations at Warwick University.

The candidates for the September 9 presidential election include President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Qasim Ibrahim from the Jumhooree Party and Mohamed Nazim from the Maldives National Party.

The main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives insists that former President Abdulla Yameen, who is serving an 11-year jail sentence on corruption charges, remains the party's presidential candidate.
