With the new academic year due to begin soon, new regulations were gazetted today for the registration and licensing of teachers working at schools and other institutions.

The regulations for licensing teachers were formulated under the new education law enacted two years ago in August 2021. The law required the registration and licensing of all teachers in the Maldives within two years.

The regulations made it mandatory for all local and foreign teachers to obtain the license but exempted administrative staff, support staff, lab assistants and trainees working under the supervision of a teacher.

The license is to be issued by the Teacher Registration Board set up for the purpose at the education ministry. The types of licenses issued by the board include:

  • Teaching license
  • School leadership license
  • Schools professions license

The regulations came into force today but it is unclear how existing employees should continue working.

The regulations state that "teachers in service on the date when the regulations are enforced must register and seek a license as instructed by the board."
