Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday and taken to the police station on suspicion of refusing to stop for traffic police.
Amir was told to stop at a vehicle checkpoint set up with cones near the State Electricity Company (STELCO) flats in Hulhumale' phase two. After he refused and drove on, the police found him later and arrested him around 1:15 am.
Amir was taken to the police station and released about an hour later around 2:15 am. His motorcycle was impounded on charges of reckless driving.
A video that emerged of Amir's arrest shows the MP being arrested while he was on his cycle.
"Don't hurt me, don't hurt me, don't hurt me," Amir is heard saying in the video.
An informed source told Adhadhu on the condition of anonymity that Amir responded with obscene language and drove on when the police ordered him to stop. He only identified himself when he was taken to the police station.
Amir was not responding to calls or available for comment.
