The Elections Commission (EC) has opened for applications to contest in the September 9 presidential election.

According to an announcement gazetted on Saturday, candidacy papers can be filed from 9 am July 23 to 2 pm August 7.

The first round of voting will be held on September 9 and the run-off round will be held on September 30. Over 280,000 people are eligible to vote.

Eligible voters can re-register till August 5. Some 1321 people re-registered within the first three days of re-registration. Of these, 90 percent re-registered online.

A total of 604 polling stations will be set up for the presidential election. These include 187 polling stations in the Male' area, 319 polling stations in the atolls, 78 polling stations in resorts, 13 polling stations abroad and seven polling stations in prisons and industrial regions.

However, these figures are likely to change as the EC has decided to allow polling stations in 23 more resorts.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is running for re-election through the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket.

The main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) insists that jailed leader and former President Abdulla Yameen is their candidate.

However, Yameen will be unable to contest if his prison sentence is not overturned.
