The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to publish the name and polling station of people who re-register to vote in the September 9 presidential election.
It would be the first time that the list of re-registered voters is made public.
EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb told Adhadhu that the list of re-registered voters will be published on the commission's website and also shared with political parties.
"For example, a person registered to Haa Alif Kelaa will be known to that person, political parties and everyone else. We don't want to hide anything," Habeeb said.
The EC is trying to ensure that the upcoming election is conducted as fairly and transparently as possible, he said.
In the first three days after re-registration was opened on July 16, 1321 people submitted forms, according to the EC.
Habeeb said 90 percent or 1185 forms were submitted online, of which only nine forms were submitted overseas.
The deadline for re-registration is 4 pm on August 5.
People who voted in Male' in previous elections are not required to re-register.
"So we urge if there's any confusion to message 1414 to check where you're voting. Some people are applying to register in Male' again. That will be rejected. That's because they were registered in Male' for previous elections," Habeeb said.
The biggest obstacle to re-registration has been the difficulty faced by Maldivians residing in other countries in getting a one-time password to foreign phone numbers in order to submit applications online.
EC President Fuwad Thowfeek said arrangements could not be made for online re-registration from overseas and apologized for the inconvenience.
Maldivians abroad could register by sending the OTP to the phone number of a person in the country or by submitting the form to a Maldivian embassy.
As only employees can register to vote in a resort, Habeeb noted that resort workers must submit an ID card copy with the resort's seal to verify their employment.
2023 presidential election
The first round of voting in this year's presidential election is due to take place on September 9. If a second round is required, the run-off election will be scheduled for September 30.
More than 280,000 people are eligible to vote.
Candidacy papers can be filed between July 23 to August 3.
The EC has decided to keep a total of 604 ballot boxes, including 187 boxes in Male', 319 boxes in the atolls, 78 boxes in resorts, 13 boxes in other countries and seven boxes in jails and industrial islands.
But the numbers are likely to change as the EC has decided to set up polling stations in an additional 23 resorts.
