The Democrats have decided to hold a primary to select their candidate for the September presidential election.
During the first meeting of the party's interim council on Saturday night, MP Hassan Latheef said the party would hold a primary to choose a candidate.
Hassan, who is the founder of The Democrats, said efforts were underway to open for applications on Monday.
At Saturday night's meeting, several internal committees were formed including an election committee to oversee matters related to the primary.
The election committee will announce a date to hold the primary.
The Elections Commission (EC) will open for candidates' applications on July 23. The window to submit applications will close on August 3 and voting will take place on September 9.
The Democrats was formed under the leadership of former president and speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
He has suggested fielding a joint opposition candidate to defeat President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who is running for re-election under the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket.
But the coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) insists that jailed opposition leader former president Abdulla Yameen would be their candidate.
