The opposition Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) coalition's leadership on Tuesday met with Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim.
The meeting took place in one of Qasim's resorts. PNC president Abdul Raheem Abdulla, PPM MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef, PPM vice president and MP Ahmed Shiyam and Mahibadhoo MP Mohamed Thoriq attended the meeting.
PPM-PNC coalition said "major national issues" were discussed during the meeting with JP's presidential candidate. But they did not provide details.
According to the coalition, the meeting with Qasim was held under the instruction of jailed opposition leader and former president Abdulla Yameen.
Despite JP remaining in the governing coalition, Qasim has been criticizing the government and president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Solih invited JP to back his re-election campaign, but the party awarded its presidential ticket to Qasim for a third time.
