Maldivian families stranded in war-torn Syria will be brought back by the end of August, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said today.
Speaking at a rally held in Shaviyani Komandoo to launch the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) campaign for September's presidential election, Solih said the Maldivian families in Syria will return by the end of August.
"The work we're doing today is to bring back mothers and children left alone there. God willing, this work will be completed by the end of August and we will bring the families back to the Maldives," he said.
The president said 70 Maldivians have died fighting in Syria and more than 100 Maldivians remain in the country.
The Maldivians at Kurdish camps in Syria are being brought back after they pleaded for government assistance to return.
Bringing back Maldivian families from Syria through a proper mechanism was a pledge of the current administration.
