President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday began a visit to Shaviyani atoll to launch his campaign as the presidential candidate of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
He is scheduled to visit Komandoo, Maroshi, Noomaraa and Foakaidhoo during the tour of Shaviyani atoll.
He is accompanied by Adhaalath Party leader and Home Minister Imran Abdulla, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) leader and MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and MDP officials.
Solih secured the MDP candidacy after defeating former President and parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed during the party primaries in January.
Nasheed has since left the MDP and formed The Democrats to work against the government. The new party had also announced that they would be fielding a candidate for the September election.
