The court refused to order remand detention and released a man who was arrested while trying to smuggle more than four cases of alcohol into Addu Hithadhoo.
According to the police, the man was arrested in an operation conducted by the Hithadhoo police station based on intelligence information about an alcohol smuggling attempt. After he was arrested and searched, 50 liquor bottles (four cases of 12 bottles and two separate bottles) were found in his belongings, the police said.
"...when he was brought to the Hithadhoo magistrate court for a decision on his detention, the court released him," the police said in information made public.
The police did not comment on the reason why he was released.
Equipment used to brew alcohol was found in an operation conducted in Hithadhoo on June 25 as part of efforts to ensure public safety during the Eid holidays. But no suspect was arrested at the time.
