The Democrats said today that the new party will be able to work together with the Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) coalition even if the opposition coalition does not entirely stop its "India Out" activities.

The "India Out" campaign was previously the main source of disagreement between the parties. Responding on behalf of The Democrats at a joint press briefing after discussions at the PPM office, Medhu Henveiru MP Ali Azim said both parties have agreed to compromise.

"We will do everything necessary to change the government together. So anything is possible," Azim said.

His answer came in response to a journalist asking if "we could see The Democrats participating in any activity such as the PPM's 'India Out' activity."

Azim said the PPM-PNC will not change completely in one day to align with the ideology of The Democrats.

"So we have to accept those things," he said.

When a journalist asked whether The Democrats would join the PPM-PNC's efforts to free former president Abdulla Yameen, Azim said the party has always wanted a fair trial.

But the concern was the imprisonment solely of Yameen while many people were accused of involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC) corruption.

"We have always been concerned about the conviction and jailing of just one person," Azim said.

When the journalist repeated the question about whether members of The Democrats could join efforts to free Yameen, Azim said the party's involvement would be "seen majorly."

Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, the PPM's vice president, said at today's briefing that the PPM was working with The Democrats under President Yameen's instructions.
