Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairman and economic development minister Fayyaz Ismail called it a "sad day" after speaker of parliament Mohamed Nasheed resigned from the MDP today.
Nasheed left the MDP with his 'Fikuregge Dhirun' faction in the final stages of becoming a political party. Nasheed formed the breakaway faction amid disagreements with the MDP's other leaders after the party's presidential primary.
Nasheed revealed his departure from the MDP by posting on social media the photo of a handwritten resignation letter addressed to Fayyaz. Retweeting Nasheed's tweet, Fayyaz said he wished Nasheed well on behalf of himself and the MDP.
"Whilst this is a sad day, this also paves the way for all parties to move forward in their chosen paths," Fayyaz said.
In his resignation letter, Nasheed said he believed staying in the MDP was not the best course of action in light of the situation in the country.
With the resignation of Nasheed, who is also speaker of parliament, the post of MDP's president has become vacant.
Nasheed was among the founding members who petitioned the government to form the MDP in 2003. Nasheed was the party's first presidential candidate and the first person to become president on the party's ticket.
