A local company has been awarded the project to build two Agri-Boats designed by the Marine Police for Agro National Corporation.
The purpose of the Agri-Boats is to supply vegetables and fruits grown by farmers to markets in different parts of the country.
The contract was awarded for the construction of 65-foot and 45-foot boats. The project is supported by UNDP and Japan.
“The Agri-Boat, with swift delivery of produce in cold and dry storage will reduce post harvest losses for farmers, diversifying market access, boosting economic opportunities and enhancing food security, especially in island communities of Maldives with limited access to fresh produce,” the UNDP said.
The cold storages on the Agri-Boats will be powered through solar panels. UNDP said “this is a step towards minimizing environmental impact, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a greener and more sustainable operation.”
The contract was awarded to Fix in Marine company which has a boatyard in Kaafu Huraa island. The company has designed its own boats and are preparing to launch them under the name Bahtheli this year.
Agronet, which is 100 percent government-owned, plays an important role in implementing the government's strategic action plan. One of the most important plans of the government is to reduce food imports and increase production.
