President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to revise the disability allowance and introduce additional allowances.

The President’s Office said the changes were recommended by the cabinet after deliberating on a paper submitted by the gender ministry.

The details of the new disability allowances would be revealed soon, the office added in a press release on Tuesday night.

The disability allowance framework has been revised for the first time since it was introduced 12 years ago.

The decision to revise the framework was made last year and was announced with the state budget for this year.

At present, MVR 2000 per month is given as disability allowance. The government was earlier requested to increase it to MVR 5000.

In 2019, MP Mohamed Nazim proposed an amendment to increase the disability allowance, but the ruling party rejected the bill.

Earlier this month, Solih also announced to increase the allowance for elderly people. Currently, people over the age of 65 get MVR 5000 per month.
