President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih supports the no-confidence motion against parliament speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed, the government spokesperson said on Thursday.
The parliamentary group of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted the motion on Wednesday with the signatures of 54 MPs, including 50 MPs from MDP.
“The president will go forward with the decision of the party’s parliamentary group. They [PG] discuss all matters with the president. The president discusses with all the MPs in the MDP PG,” the government spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed said at a press briefing at the President’s Office.
All the MDP MPs have confidence in Solih, he added.
MDP decided to move the motion against Nasheed, who is also the president of the ruling party, after accusing him of violating parliamentary procedures and stalling a no-confidence motion against the attorney general.
Fifty-four MPs signed the motion. Fifty MPs from MDP signed the motion in addition to Thulusdhoo MP Ibrahim Naseem, Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir and Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed.
Nasheed formed a faction within MDP after his defeat in the party primary to Solih on January 28. His supporters have left the party and are now working to form the new opposition party The Democrats.
